Problems with the housing lottery persist in Final Fantasy XIV. The director makes a statement

One of the most anticipated changes to Final Fantasy XIV with Patch 6.1 is undoubtedly the Housing Lottery system. Theoretically, this system gives anyone the opportunity to enter a random lottery drawing for an opportunity to buy housing. Unfortunately, this system has seen constant problems.

On April 16th, Square Enix released an update to Final Fantasy XIV Lodestone, sharing the most common error messages they’ve seen in the Housing Lottery, including the following:

  • There were no participants in this lottery.
  • The winning number is . . . 0. May you have better luck next time.

The team continued to investigate the issues over the weekend and provided more extensive feedback as more information became available.

After consultations between the development team and Naoki Yoshida, the producer and director of Final Fantasy XIV apologized and further explained the issues with their system. Yoshida made the following statement:

First, we understand this is a major issue and are prioritizing our investigation into the matter. We are working to identify the problem in the relevant program; However, since the process is very complex and there are many patterns for the lottery conditions, it will take some time to pinpoint the problem. . . As we investigate and address the issue, we will be extending the results reporting period, which was previously scheduled to end at 7:59 am PDT on Wednesday, April 20, 2022. We will not enter the next lottery cycle until the investigation is complete and the situation is addressed.

On April 17, Yoshida returned to elaborate on the disruptions to the housing system. The Square Enix team has identified the key issues and shared them in their Lodestone blog post, which explains how the housing system will work once issues find a fix. The following cases are the most prominent problems as described by Naoki Yoshida.

  • Cases where the lottery has been properly conducted internally and the winner exists, but the results show the winning number as 0.
  • Cases where there was a single entry in the lottery, but the results show that there was no entrant or winner.
  • Instances where this is not a winner despite entries being submitted by multiple friends or members of the free enterprise.

While the issues are being reviewed, Yoshida confirmed that the team is still trying to fix the current issues and plans to fix the issues again as soon as possible.
