Project Mugen Trailer Introduces Open-World Urban Fantasy RPG

Netease Games has released the first trailer Project Mugenan urban fantasy role-playing game that should rival the upcoming miHoYo Zenless Zone Zero. It will be a free game available on PC, mobile, PS4 and PS5. While pre-registrations are open now for players interested in the title, Netease hasn’t given any indication as to when we might be able to get our hands on it.

As far as gameplay goes, the trailer available below makes it look like a premium offering. The traversal options in particular are intriguing, with standard walking movement accompanied by Spider-Man-esque swinging, air blasts, and wall racing. You can also command vehicles if that’s faster for you. Meanwhile, the combat seems to be real-time and extremely flashy as it mixes melee combat, gunfights, supernatural powers, etc Like a dragon-type environmental attacks.

After some snippets of the trailer were leaked earlier in the week, some commenters referenced it Project Mugen as an anime version of Grand Theft Auto. Given the dense metropolitan setting, it’s easy to see where these comparisons are coming from, but the team-based combat and gameplay appearance seem more fitting Genshin Impact or Honkai: StarRail.

The story takes place in a secondary world that combines reality with the supernatural. You play as an esper – which sounds like some sort of investigator – to solve mysteries, partake in what the city has to offer, and ultimately save the world from chaos. So, you know, pretty standard anime RPG offering, but at least it looks exceptionally pretty. According to Riten Huang, senior marketing director at Thunder Fire Studio, it’s a “love letter to urban fantasy,” adding, “We wanted to create a world that players could relate to, but still find enough secrets for them to keep coming back.”

Project Mugen is being developed at Naked Rain, a subsidiary of Thunder Fire Studio, which in turn is a subsidiary of Netease Games. We’ll keep an eye on it as we get closer to release. So be sure to check back for the latest information.
