Proposed Jet, Cardinal Deal Brings Isaiah Simmons

Isaiah Simmons, Cardinal

Arizona Cardinals defender Isaiah Simmons called for defensive play.

The New York Jets have never been shy about making a tough summer deal to spice things up.

While the current brass has launched a lot of different moves over the past few months, they have yet to trigger a single move. The latest possibility that could change that in a major way is going into training camp.

There are many different reasons why people choose to trade in any sport. One of the most common is an underperforming player, being sold for a relatively cheap price, and seeing if a change of scenery can bring out their full potential.

There have been plenty of horror stories, and the corpses in the graveyard of this strategy have tumbled down like a Saturday morning pancake. However, for every failed deal, there is always a compelling success story that makes you look for the next one.

That very theme leads us to Arizona Cardinals defender Isaiah Simmons.

He originally joined the NFL in 2020 as the 8th overall pick in the first round. Simmons is heralded as an elite Swiss army knife that a defensive dispatcher can move around like a chess piece.

However, the university’s success does not translate into advantages:

  • Two interceptions
  • Total 159 tackles
  • 3.5 sacks

Simmons isn’t in danger of a cut this season, but his stock has fallen after two very long campaigns so far.

It’s the perfect time for another team to attack while the iron cools. The talent is still there, but for one reason or another, things have yet to excite the former Clemson Tigers talented star.

A perfect match would make sense to place this dynamic Swiss Army knife in New York with head coach Robert Saleh.

The Cardinals can send the first former player to the Jets in exchange for a conditional third-round pick in 2023. It will have performance incentives built in to be able to make it as high as a turn. choose the second round in next year’s class.

On the other side of the coin if he continues to get frustrated, it can drop and become the fourth coin.

A reclamation project

Ever since Saleh took on head coach duties with the Jets, he’s been looking for his version of Fred Warner. A former defensive back has transformed into a defender and become an All-Pro on the next level.

I’m not saying Simmons will be at that level, but it’s hard to deny the incredible talent he has.

What made him great at Clemson was his ability to do a hundred different things.

NFL dot com’s Lance Zierlein described it perfectly saying he has, “a bachelor [degree] in three positions (position angle, safety, backup route). “

Though his greatest strength quickly became his greatest weakness in the NFL. With the trainers asking him to be a henchman of all trades, he has become a no-brainer.

It seems that Simmons has too much information and thinking when playing, leading to errors in handling. If he can focus on a single position or role on his own, perhaps we’ll see the same player secure a top 10 pick in the NFL draft.

While it’s not just his versatility that makes him special, it’s when you combine that with a rare God-given talent: speed, length, and athleticism.

Simmons is still young at just 23 years old (will be 24 at the start of the 2022 season). With two years left on his rookie contract and deciding on a five-year option next season, now is the time to get started.

The price tag to get him should be relatively low considering his poor Pro Football Focus score and lack of overall impact so far in his career, but it would be a low risk compared to high reward move type.

If this turns out to be successful, Saleh will have a superstar defensively that he can build around. If it doesn’t work, then you simply lose a draft pick mid-round.

You miss out on 100 percent of the photos you don’t take, and this is one worth diving into the depths of.
