PS5 has apparently been jailbroken and people are already installing PT on it

Sony’s PlayStation 5 appears to be jailbroken – so of course people are installing PT

PlayStation modder SpecterDev earlier today announced the new Jailbreak – an experimental IPV6 kernel exploit for the PS5. This jailbreak relies on a WebKit vulnerability as an entry point, so it only works with PS5 firmware 4.03 or lower… and even then it only seems to work about 30% of the time.

Simply put, jailbreaking refers to the reverse engineering of closed hardware and is commonly used to unlock debug menus and allow unauthorized software to be used. Friendly modder Lance McDonald showed this new jailbreak in action by installing the famous lost game PT on his P55.

As you can see in the video above, the jailbreak gives users access to the debug menu as well as the ability to install a PS4 PKG file – essentially a backup of a game. It seems McDonald couldn’t help but install the now-defunct Silent Hill demo, PT, which has been in high demand since its removal from the PS Store in May 2015.

While Sony is likely to keep an eye on this PS5 jailbreak, its limitations mean it’s unlikely to be widely deployed in its current form. This is primarily because this new exploit gives you read/write access but no ability to run anything you install – so in the case of McDonald’s it can install PT but not actually start it.

That’s not the only way this new PS5 jailbreak is limited either. It currently only works on PS5s running firmware 4.03 – a version released back in October 2021. The exploit can Work on other earlier firmware versions, but creator SpectorDev says it may need tweaking. Also, you can’t install any homebrew-related code either.

However, this is seen as a first step for other modders and hackers who will likely try to build on top of the entry point. While jailbreaking is not necessarily illegal in and of itself, it can result in your PlayStation Network account being banned, void any warranties and could result in you rendering your entire console unusable.
