Pundits can’t believe Arsenal are signing a £42m man for such a low fee

By the sound of it, Arsenal are getting closer to their first signing of the summer as São Paulo striker Marquinhos moves closer to a Premier League move.

The Brazilian giants have already accepted an offer worth £2.5million and Fabrizio Romano believes the paperwork is now being prepared.

Personal conditions were also agreed with the 19-year-old.

Arsenal were able to sign the South American prodigy at a bargain price due to his contract situation and Brazilian football pundits are stunned.

What’s the matter?

Well, vampeta – who has accumulated 39 Internationals for Brazil – continued speaking Jovem Pan Esportes about Marquinhos and believes that São Paulo is being robbed.

The 48-year-old said: “This is absurd. That’s absurd. They will lose Marquinhos to Arsenal for £2.5m.”

Thiago Asmar – the host of Jovem Pan Esportes – then added that it was a “scandal” before implying that Marquinhos is actually worth a lot more.

Those in Brazil clearly believe Arsenal are getting a bargain in Marquinhos and we can’t help but agree.

The teenager actually had a release clause in his contract, which was said to be worth €50m (£42m).

However, FIFA regulations mean that Marquinhos’ contract actually expires this summer and not in May 2024 as São Paulo believed.

That’s because according to FIFA, an initial contract in Brazil can only last a maximum of three years – Marquinhos wrote his current contract in 2019.

Marquinho’s deal is a win-win for Arsenal

From our point of view, a brilliant deal for the Gunners.

Even if things don’t work out for Marquinhos at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal could still turn a profit with the teenager given the low asking price.

However, he could also follow in Gabriel Martinelli’s footsteps and become a star in the Premier League, so it’s a fantastic signing for Arsenal either way.

With the likes of Martinelli and Gabriel Magalhães already in north London, the Brazilian duo should also be able to help Marquinhos settle in.

Under a coach like Mikel Arteta, who clearly focuses on youngsters, he should also get a good amount of playing time.

In many ways, this could prove to be one of Arteta’s best signings at Arsenal.
