Quantumania shrinks with Box Office Drop on its second weekend

Unfortunately, Ant-Man 3 dealt a massive blow to the box office.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania unfortunately took a hit at the domestic box office after earning an estimated $32 million, down about 69%.

The news comes via the Hollywood Reporter and would mean that the Ant-Man and the Wasp sequel has suffered its worst second-weekend drop for any mainstream comics film to open domestically for more than $100 million . While that’s an unprecedented number for a second-weekend drop, there are a few reasons the film might not have fared as well as some other MCU films.

For starters, Ant-Man 3 was hit with a Rotten rating by Rotten Tomatoes, likely hurting the film’s longevity at the domestic box office. On top of that, less than stellar word of mouth may have marred the film’s future weekends in theaters. Universal’s Cocaine Bear also opened this weekend and is said to have outperformed, which may have caused Ant-Man to lose money.

It’s also worth noting that the Ant-Man films have never been the best-performing films in the MCU, so perhaps the second-weekend dip is down to general interest in this particular franchise. The film’s successful first weekend was largely due to the official introduction of the MCU’s next Thanos-level threat, Kang the Conqueror, meaning future weekends were more likely to underperform once it was revealed who this new villain was about internet was spread.

While there are many reasons for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s underperformance, at the end of the day it shows that there are issues Marvel Studios needs to address; namely the fatigue that audiences experience with his films and the lack of excitement for the next phase. Hopefully these issues will be addressed in her upcoming films Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Wonders.
