The Pittsburgh Steelers could be the beneficiary of a familiar quarterback unhappy with his current situation.
As the relationship of Baker Mayfield and Cleveland Browns continued to deteriorate, the Browns continued to seek or become commercial partners for their disgruntled quarterback. While the Seattle Seahawks represent the most likely deal option for the Mayfield and Browns, there’s no guarantee they’re interested enough to make a deal for Mayfield considering the $18.9 million cap. his la in the 2022 season.
In a situation where the Browns cannot find a commercial partner, they may be forced to release Mayfield. According to NBC Sports’ Mike Florio, that’s a scenario Cleveland is trying to avoid because they don’t want their opponents – the Steelers – to rush in and sign Mayfield.
Not only did the Steelers intervene when signing Mayfield, the 27-year-old midfielder also “enjoyed the opportunity” of sticking with his former team by signing for Pittsburgh.
“Sure, the Browns can cut Mayfield and let him sign Seattle for $1.035 million,” Florio said. “But the Browns (and Seahawks) would then take the risk that the Steelers would intervene.”
“Yes, the Steelers,” Florio continued. “Mayfield would certainly enjoy the opportunity to stick with the Browns by playing for a nasty opponent. He will be better than Mitchell Trubisky or Mason Rudolph, and coach Mike Tomlin can absolutely push Mayfield to become the best version of himself. “
Mayfield likely to emerge as Steelers QB
In a hypothetical scenario when Mayfield signed for the Steelers, he would immediately become the preferred player to start in midfield. Just a year ago, Mayfield led the Browns to their first playoff win in 26 years and was just one short of leading Cleveland to an AFC Championship game.
Mayfield will be battling the likes of Mitch Trubisky – who spent the 2021 season as a backup after washing his hands with the Chicago Bears – and Mason Rudolph, who was previously benched as a return starter in 2019 to support an unreformed freelance agent in Devlin Hodges.

Mayfield Feeling ‘Disrespected’ by Steelers Rival
The current Browns quarterback has made no secret of how “disrespected” he feels towards the Cleveland organization. After acquiring Pro Bowl QB Deshaun Watson three times, Mayfield spoke about her displeasure on the “YNK” podcast posted Wednesday, April 13.
“One hundred percent,” Mayfield said on the “YNK” podcast. “I was told one thing and they completely did another.”
The quartet that started four years ago struggled with a pile of rubble last season and his output declined as a result. Mayfield made just 17 touchdowns compared to 13 interceptions with a score of 83.1 1/4 and a record of 6-8.
According to Pro Football Focus, Mayfield’s attack stat of 63.6 in 2021 ranks 28th among all eligible midfielders. That’s a huge drop from Mayfield’s 81.6 offensive class in 2020, 14th among all eligible midfielders.
With that said, Mayfield’s play in the 2020 season offers a glimpse of the veteran midfielder’s ability when healthy.
Considering the Steelers have won a playoff berth with much worse play from Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh will enjoy the chance to sign a proven midfielder with recent playoff history.
