The Los Angeles Rams agreed to trade six-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Miami Dolphins, a person familiar with the negotiations confirmed Sunday, to expedite the dissolution of the Rams’ Super Bowl roster and at the same time to add to the Dolphins’ growing roster of star players.

According to the person with knowledge of the deliberations, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the Dolphins agreed to send Hunter Long and a third-round pick in next month’s NFL draft to the Rams because trade wasn’t until Wednesday can become official. Then the new NFL league year begins and the free agent market is officially opened. Free agents can start negotiations with other teams on Monday.

But the teams have already started lining up trades and the Ramsey deal is significant for both the Dolphins and the Rams.

“I prayed specifically for this for about a month [and] here we go!” Ramsey wrote on Twitter.

Ramsey, 28, was selected for the last six Pro Bowls during his seven-year NFL career with the Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars. He was also named a first-team all-time player three times. The Jaguars, who took him fifth overall in 2016, traded him to the Rams in the 2019 season.

In Miami, Ramsey will partner with four-time Pro Bowl section Xavien Howard to give the Dolphins one of the NFL’s best cornerback tandems. Her roster is star-studded, helped by several high-profile deals over the past year. The Dolphins traded a blockbuster deal with the Kansas City Chiefs for speedy wide receiver Tyreek Hill last offseason. They then added standout pass rusher Bradley Chubb in a trade with the Denver Broncos in November.

The Dolphins made the AFC playoffs last season but lost to the Buffalo Bills in the opening round. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa missed that game after suffering his second diagnosed concussion of the 2022 season. But the Dolphins reaffirmed their commitment to Tagovailoa Exercise of the five-year option in his rookie contract on Friday and have now further improved the cast around him. Ramsey will play for the team’s recently hired defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio.

“Training is going crazy now,” Hill wrote on Twitterpossibly referring to the prospect of him and colleague Jaylen Waddle working against Ramsey and Howard.

In Rams-like fashion, the Dolphins are taking a win-now approach as they attempt to challenge the Bills for AFC East supremacy. The trade leaves them with four choices in the seven-round draft this year.

The Rams used their all-in approach to build a star-packed roster that produced a Super Bowl title in the 2021 season. But they broke to a 5-12 record last season and coach Sean McVay considered taking a break from coaching before deciding to return in January. Along with pass rusher Von Miller, wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and left tackle Andrew Whitworth, Ramsey is among prominent players to have left the organization since the Super Bowl triumph.

The return in the Ramsey trade was relatively modest, with just a draft pick on day two and a tight end that had a catch over two NFL seasons. The Rams are avoiding having to pay Ramsey his due of $17 million in salary for the 2023 season under a contract that runs through 2025.

the dolphins Reportedly agreed to adjust the money-guaranteed aspects of Ramsey’s contract as part of the deal. Ramsey is expected to earn a total of $55 million over the three remaining seasons on the contract.
