So far NFL fans have witnessed how Sean McVay celebrates his Super Bowl 56 win with the Los Angeles Rams – from jubilation, cheers, champagne, and celebrations with those closest to him. .
But here’s what many may not know after that game, which McVay revealed during an appearance on Mike Silver’s Open Mike podcast: He received a wonderful, unusual text message from someone in his past…let alone someone who once found it difficult to part with McVay.
That text? It comes through the Detroit Lions and their franchise quarterback and Ex-Ram Jared Goff.
McVay shared what it was like to receive the message
Ram fans and NFL fans know about the departures of McVay and Goff that led to the arrival of Matthew Stafford. That commercial gamble resulted in the Rams winning the Super Bowl and giving both McVay and Stafford their first rings.
But McVay shared that one of the best moments when posting the Super Bowl was getting a surprise from Goff himself, who lined up at McVay’s quarterback from 2017 to 2020.
“What shows he really is a student and a classy act, is one of the best text messages I got after the Super Bowl from Jared Goff,” he told Silver. “The further we go, the more we appreciate the four great years we had together because it was a lot of really good times. He’s a special guy, a very good football player who has done a great job for the Lions. “
McVay also gave an assessment of how Goff performed in his first season at Motor City.
“I think he’s been playing really well for a long time,” McVay said.
He added what he hopes to see in the future for Goff and the lions.
“You have some people around him, (former Ram) Josh Reynolds, but overall, better and clearer communication is what I wanted,” McVay said.
McVay goes deeper into commerce
McVay pointed out last year that the trade between Stafford and Goff comes with fast-moving parts.
And for McVay, it made him realize his regret at not handling the transaction the way he expected.
“It was a tough one for me,” McVay said. “Because it’s important to me, more than anything, to be a good communicator. (Be) clear, open and honest and make sure people don’t let their guard down and really respect the players and coaches and what they’re supposed to do. I wish there had been better face-to-face communication. “
He also added what hurt him when he cut ties with Goff.
“One thing that hurts me is that I would never want anything to be misunderstood that is my appreciation, my respect for Jared. Was it a difficult decision? Right. Is there something I could have handled better in terms of the clarity provided to him? No doubt,” McVay said.
And how would he do things differently?
“If I have it again, what I will do is, before I go to Cabo, when there is a possibility, okay, if there is Matthew Stafford, if there are other midfielders available, that will be what we do. will discover – you sit down with him (Goff), you look him in the eye, you tell him that instead of calling him and arranging a meeting that was my intention when I returned from Cabo,” explains McVay.
McVay said how much he still cares about Goff and that he’s “assured as if he’s done a lot of good.”
