Rangers are reportedly eyeing a 22-goal star McGeady gushed about earlier this season

Says the Northern Echo Rangers have joined Norwich and Swansea in the race for Sunderland ace Ross Stewart – after a superb 21-22 season. A player who has been praised by Celtic icon Aiden McGeady this season.

Stewart, 25, joined Sunderland from Ross County in January 2021 for a six-figure fee and hasn’t looked back. While his first six months were a bit difficult with three goals in 12 games, he has been in excellent form this season.

The former Celtic Academy player, who has already played 45 times, has scored an incredible 22 goals. This season he was called up to the Scotland squad by Steve Clarke as Sunderland look to hold on to a play-off spot.

Of course, promotion to the Championship could see Stewart ignoring a move – but with his contract ending in 2023, Rangers could falter. In a speech in September, McGeady praised the potential signing of Ibrox.

“Charlie [Wyke] is probably more of a poacher than Rosco, while Rosco is fast and works really hard – I’m not saying Charlie didn’t work hard, but they’re different types of forwards.” McGeady told the Chronicle.

“This season the pressure has been on Ross to replace Charlie’s goals. So far he has done that and we can’t really ask for more from him. Ideally it would be great if he could score 15-20 goals, which I think he can do.

McGeady on Stewart: Rangers would be a brilliant move for the forward

Alfredo Morelos could be in a similar situation to Stewart’s with the Colombian this summer – close to entering the final 12 months of his contract. Kemar Roofe and Fashion Sakala are good substitutes but inconsistent.

Having a proper No. 9 in Stewart to match Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s style of play – fast, industrious – would make Stewart thrive. The question is, would he get the playing time needed to show that?
