Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo has been heavily criticized by the Nigerian newspaper pulse after the Super Eagles were eliminated from the 2022 World Cup qualifiers with a 1-1 draw with Ghana. Pulse gave the Ibrox man a rating of 3/10.
Aribo, 25, has been a regular for Rangers this season – he has already made 45 appearances in all competitions for the Gers. He was involved in 15 goals, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists for Rangers.
That form has made him a regular for Nigeria, who earned their 17th cap for their country on Tuesday night. It was an extremely important clash, one that required a win to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year.
But the game ended in a 1-1 draw, with Thomas Partey scoring for Arsenal. William Troost-Ekong equalized with a penalty but Nigeria couldn’t capitalize. Pulse heavily criticized the Rangers midfielder after the game.
Pulse gave Aribo a 3/10 and reported, “On a bumpy, uneven surface, Aribo looked leggy and inconsequential. He just couldn’t break away from his tracer at any point. When he conceived in space, his touch was heavy.”
Nigerian media on Aribo: Rangers star can do much better
But it’s not an isolated case. Aribo’s form has been dropping lately. The Rangers midfielder has scored six goals and provided four assists in his first 19 league games. In the next 12 he has scored just one goal and created two.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst is likely to start Aribo – along with Nigerian teammates Leon Balogun and Calvin Bassey – against Celtic at Ibrox on Sunday. But he’s tasked with getting a big game out of him.
