Claudio Ranieri has gushed over Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Nicolo Zaniolo and his only issue with the Roma ace while speaking to him Corriere dello Sport.
The Italy striker blew Ranieri’s heels after firing the Giallorossi into Thursday’s Europa Conference League semifinals against Bodo/Glimt. Zaniolo scored a hat-trick with goals after 23, 29 and 49 minutes to build on Tammy Abraham’s early opener for a 5-2 aggregate win.
Jose Mourinho called up the winger for his 35th appearance this season in his starting line-up for the clash at the Stadio Olimpico. The Massa-born maestro also now has seven goals and eight assists in all competitions ahead of his side’s visit to the Serie A title-chaser in Napoli on Monday.
Zaniolo had fallen out of favor in recent weeks as Mourinho had not used the 22-year-old in an Italian top flight game since March 13. He also missed the first leg of their encounter at Bodo/Glimt because of a hip flexors Injury that forced the nine-cap ace to sit out a league game.
Injuries were a big part of Zaniolo’s still raw career after missing all of last season. The striker broke the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in September 2020, having just returned from surgery on a right ACL injury he sustained in January.
Ranieri knocked out by ‘impressive’ Liverpool, Tottenham target Roma’s Zaniolo
Zaniolo’s exploits against Bodo/Glimt will not have gone awry at Tottenham or Liverpool as the Premier League duo are keen on the Roma star’s transfer. Roma live Note that both, as well as Manchester United, have been in exploratory talks about a possible end-of-season move.
Additionally, Enrico Kamelio notes that an English side have made a bid of €35m (£29m) for the Giallorossi. But the Stadio Olimpico hierarchy are asking €50m (£41.5m) if they decide to make a sale.
Ranieri’s praise suggests that Tottenham or Liverpool could sign a promising young Roma striker if they are behind the offer. But the manager, who won the Premier League with Leicester City, notes the Italian can occasionally be too greedy for his own good in the last third.
“He’s a crucial player, we saw him against Bodo,” said Ranieri called. “He’s a striker who needs to find the ball in space, he has impressive quality and strength – although sometimes he could pass a little more when he’s on the edge of the box.
“But when he’s got the door in front of him, it’s hard to go wrong. We saw Zaniolo on Thursday evening. Mourinho knows how to deal with it.
“He can’t always play with what he’s been through. It’s important that the boy feels everyone’s trust: coach, team-mates, club and fans.”
