Rays’ RHP Aaron Civale meets the Rockies for the first time

The Tampa Bay RaysThe team’s strength at the start of the season – their starting pitch – has gone from absolute dominance to “is it good enough to go far into the playoffs?”. However, due to a spate of injuries, right-hander Aaron Civale is expected to provide shutdown stuff.
Civale (6-3, 2.44 ERA) was acquired from the Cleveland Guardians for esteemed farmhand Kyle Manzardo on July 31 and was all but announced and will make his first career start against the Cleveland Guardians Colorado Rockies on Wednesday in St. Petersburg, Fla.
In three starts in August for Tampa Bay, the former Northeastern University pitcher is 1-1 with a 2.94 ERA.
The rotation lost two of their starting five early in the season – Drew Rasmussen and Jeffrey Springs – for a total of 11 starts.
Two days after rays Traded-in for Civale star Shane McClanahan left the mound at Yankee Stadium with an arm injury. He was operated on by Tommy John on Monday and won’t be back until 2025.
Promising fireball player Shane Baz is also still recovering from the procedure, bringing the number of Tampa Bay pitchers to nine who have had reconstructive surgery since 2020.
“I know what kind of player[Manzardo]is,” second baseman Brandon Lowe said after the trade. “For the rays Dropping him for Civale shows even more who he is as a pitcher and what he can do for us and how much they believe he can help this team.”
In the eighth inning he was down 4-3 rays scored nine goals and won 12-4 on Tuesday night, which shocked the team rockies.
American League top hitter Yandy Diaz (.328) had the game-winning RBI, and rookie Osleivis Basabe hit his first career home run — a grand slam — as the home team hit 16 and against the national team on 12: 10th all time advanced league west club.
rockies Manager Bud Black detailed some close plays in the disastrous period, including a looped leadoff single from Jose Siri, a potential double-play ball that bounced off the glove of diving third baseman Ryan McMahon, and a 3-2 walk for rookie Curtis Mead filled the bases with no outs.
“Baseball got us a little bit that inning,” Black said. “It’s baseball, isn’t it? A customs game. … They just pooled a bunch of singles and put the ball in play. That’s something we’re talking about on offense.”
On Wednesday the rockies will start a second straight left-hander in Austin Gomber (9-9, 5.52), who will face the for the first time rays.
A native of Winter Garden, Florida, less than two hours from there rays‘ Dome, Gomber has performed much better as the season progressed.
In his eight starts in July and August, the former Florida Atlantic University hurler is 3-2 with a 3.50 ERA.
However, after allowing a season-low monthly batting average of .277 in July, Gomber hit a .323 batting average over 16 1/3 innings in August.
Unsurprisingly, the five-year veteran is 5-4 with a 7.06 ERA in 14 starts at explosive Coors Field, but he is 4-5 with a 3.59 ERA in 11 road stints.
Overall, Gomber has won five of his last seven decisions.
