Crystal Palace are concerned about Cheikhou Kouyate’s future, The Sun (February 13, page 61) reports that there is a real ‘fear’ that the Premier League veteran could leave for the Middle East.
For the second summer in a row, Crystal Palace is facing the prospect of losing all its seasoned, experienced campaigners on a free transfer.
Scott Dann, Andros TownsendGary Cahill and more leave when their contracts expire in 2021.
This time, it could be Jordan Ayew, James McArthur, Jeffrey Schlupp, James Tomkins and the aforementioned Kouyate.
Kouyate, a £9.5m signing from rivals West Ham United in London in the summer of 2018, have missed the last five Premier League matches while helping lead Senegal to Africa Cup of Nations glory.
The fact that Palace have failed to win any of those – the goalless draw away at Brentford on Saturday was the latest in an increasingly long string of poor performances – is no coincidence.
Will Cheikhou Kouyate leave Crystal Palace?
According to The Sun, Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad outfit is of great interest to former runner-up Anderlecht.
And Crystal Palace ‘fears’ that Kouyate will be lured away from Selhurst Park by a move to cash in on the Middle East.
Kouyate earns £65,000 a week at South London club. One doubts he would enjoy a significant day’s salary if he swapped Crystal Palace for a team currently flying high at the top of the Saudi Arabian Pro League table.
The Athletic announced that contract negotiations between Kouyate and Palace are currently underway. However, both sides are far apart as things remain stable.
Kouyate wants a two-year deal. However, given that he will turn 33 at the end of the year, Palace are looking to extend it by 12 months.
