Researchers puzzle over unusual spread of monkeypox in Democratic Republic of Congo

Monkeypox, which has put the global health community on high alert since its recent emergence in dozens of countries worldwide, is also confounding researchers in the Democratic Republic. Congo, the country has been dealing with the virus for decades.

Researchers at the DRC say that the virus, which has been reported in the central African country since 1970, is being found in provinces where it has never been seen before. So far, they don’t know why.
