Rita’s periods negatively impacted her OCD and anxiety, rendering her unable to work during the weeks they spiked.
She said: “I was in panto and got to the point where I told my agent not to book me for dates when I knew I was going to have my period because it was so difficult to work. It was debilitating and I knew I couldn’t go through this every month.
“My feelings are completely freaked out every month. It got to the point where I have to have five days a month when I’m fine and then I start ovulating again and it’s all downhill.

At first, Rita tried a hormonal mix of estrogen and progesterone, but the concoction made her nauseous and she knew it wasn’t a long-term solution.
She was then told the “only option” was to have her uterus, cervix and both ovaries removed in a radical hysterectomy, which she described as an “assault on her femininity”.
However, she admitted that the benefits to her mental health outweigh the side effects, which she says is good for her daughters and Ben.
Before meeting Ben, Rita previously admitted she was considering “thrown down the stairs” while she battled anxiety and depression.
In January 2022, Rita revealed that she was struggling to cope with the breakdown of her 14-year marriage to husband Theo and that it had “eaten up” to keep the news quiet.
End of the road: In January 2022, Rita revealed she was struggling to cope with the breakdown of her 14-year marriage to husband Theo and it has ‘eaten’ her to keep the news quiet (pictured with Theo im year 2017).
She told The Sun: “It was all kind of thrown together in a big mess and I was very ill most of the time. I’ve lost a lot of weight. And I didn’t tell people about the marriage because even though my kids knew about it, I didn’t want them to read about it. It just ate me up not being able to tell people what’s really going on.
Revealing her all-time low, she recalled one night during a performance of The House On Cold Hill in 2019: “There were some stairs on set that I got on stage with, way up, way up.
“And I thought I could just throw myself away. I didn’t want to die. I just wanted to hurt myself enough to go to the hospital and have someone take care of me. That was terrifying.’
Rita – who played Roxy Mitchell in EastEnders from 2007 to 2017 – married hairdresser Theo in 2004, but they separated in 2018, and their divorce was finalized in 2020.
Rita admitted she struggled to get out of bed when she was at her worst.
She said: “Looking back, I used to be quite aggressive, hardened and defensive, like I was on guard all the time.
“If something bad were to happen, I would be the first to say ‘Raagh!’ say and start screaming.”
Rita said she challenged her anger at the gym where she started boxing, insisting she’s not losing her temper today and that time away from her marriage has “softened” her.
When I think about some of her deepest moments, the former I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! Roommate said: “It was a deep sadness, I would say depression. I couldn’t see the forest for the trees.’
While the star, who has struggled with anxiety and OCD for around seven years, knew she should take some time off, she kept busy with work and after leaving, she signed up for performances on the West End musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and pantomime Sleeping Beauty at EastEnders as Roxy Mitchell in 2017.
