Robert Irwin has an awkward moment when a snake moves toward his shorts

Robert Irwin had an embarrassing moment on Wednesday morning television when a snake got a little too close to him.

The khaki-clad wildlife warrior, 18, was handling a pair of diamond pythons during a segment with Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac when things took an unexpected turn.

Robert gave a nervous looking Sam one of the reptiles he was asked to keep during the live crossing from Australia Zoo on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Robert warned that one of the snakes was a bit “snappy” as it slithered down to his crotch.

“Where does it go down there?” asked Sam as the snake’s head peered south.

Sunrise presenters Natalie Barr and David Koch looked back in shock in the studio before bursting out laughing at the awkward moment.

David said he was “not sure” what was going on, but Robert appeared to have the situation under control.

The teenage photographer, always a pro, shrugged and lifted the snake’s head back to his chest.

He went on to describe the snakes as “really curious” and “smart,” saying, “Diamond pythons are beautiful, aren’t they?”

Sunrise viewers were quick to comment on the funny moment on Instagram.

‘He’s going downstairs. Danger!’ One fan wrote, while another added: “So funny.”

A third commented: “Hard pass. I love the Irwins…not so much snakes.’

Robert, the son of the late conservationist Steve Irwin, known to the world as the “Crocodile Hunter,” made the media rounds this month.

He recently said he feels closest to his father – who died in a freak accident on September 4, 2006 aged 44 – while feeding crocodiles at Australia Zoo.

“It’s an honor and most importantly, it makes me feel the closest to Dad [Steve Irwin] when I feed the crocodiles,” he told ABC’s One Plus One last week.

“You can feel his presence,” he added.
