ISTANBUL – A few weeks ago Roman Abramovich was the world’s most prominent Russian oligarch who wanted to sell or transfer some of his trophy assets such as English football club Chelsea FC amid a series of Western sanctions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
On Tuesday he played another public role: peace negotiator. Ukrainian officials say the Russian billionaire has played a key, albeit unofficial, role as a back channel to Moscow in peace talks that have been raging in spasms for weeks. Ukrainian negotiator David Arakhamia, the majority leader in the country’s parliament, said Mr Abramovich was included in the formal negotiations in Istanbul because his role as an unofficial mediator was now widely covered in the media.
