Newcastle United were interested in signing Renan Lodi a little earlier this summer.

A few months ago it was reported that the Atletico Madrid defender had decided to join the St James’s Park team following speculation of a Tyneside transfer.

The track went cold and more recently any hope Newcastle had was likely dashed by the theory that Manchester City had been in the race.

Corresponding The TelegraphPep Guardiola is interested in the Brazilian.

But Fabrizio Romano could have some good news for Newcastle if they’re still interested.

That’s because the Italian journalist has revealed that Sky Blues currently have no intention of keeping the player at the Etihad Stadium and says the deal has fallen through.

And if Eddie Howe is interested, that’s a big boost.

If City had been interested then the prospects for Newcastle would have been very bleak as Guardiola has the best squad in the Premier League that any player would love to be a part of.

However, Romano’s tweet that the Citizens aren’t in the equation makes things drastically easier for United if they renew their interest in the 24-year-old by the end of the transfer window.

Howe and the Saudi Public Investment Fund might have left Lodi anyway, but if not, they certainly see this as a positive development.
