Write in his column for Caught offsideFabrizio Romano has revealed everything he knows about the race for Darwin Nunez’s signature this summer.

Nunez is undoubtedly one of the hottest properties in Europe right now. He has had an outstanding season for Benfica and is the most valuable individual player outside of Europe’s top five leagues, according to CIES.

However, according to Romano, Nunez’s signing has become very complicated as the Uruguayan recently switched agents.

The striker’s new agent is reportedly very close to Jorge Mendes which has complicated things for everyone involved.

What’s the matter?

Romano shared what he knows about Nunez.

“Manchester United certainly discussed his name internally with Ralf Rangnick back in March, but there’s no official offer – it’s certainly not as much as the club ‘unlocking’ Darwin just yet, as others have said. We’ll see what happens to him in the next few weeks,” Romano wrote.

“Arsenal definitely wanted him in January, West Ham had offered €45m on deadline day but Benfica turned it down because they wanted €55m and now it could be closer to a €70/80m transfer fee.”

“Now the race has become very complicated for both clubs – his agent has changed and the new one is close to Jorge Mendes; Also, Darwin would like to play in the Champions League, while Arsenal look to Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus for the forward position.”

If Jorge Mendes is to have a say in Nunez’s future, it’s not good news for Arsenal.

Mendes certainly has his favorite clubs to contend with and unfortunately Arsenal is not one of them.

Manchester United, on the other hand, have a great relationship with Mendes. After all, Cristiano Ronaldo is in their books.

Tottenham have also been linked and Spurs are another club who have had a strong relationship with Mendes in recent years through the likes of Nuno Espirito Santo and Matt Doherty. So this could be good news for Spurs.

This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on.
