Rosalynn Carter, wife of former President Jimmy Carter, who was more than 76 years old, is still alive at the age of 95. Their marriage is one of the most enduring in political history.
“After a series of brief hospitalizations, former US President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend the rest of his time at home with his family and seek hospice care instead of additional medical procedures,” the Carter Center said in a statement read on February 18, 2022.
“He has the full support of his family and medical team. The Carter family requests privacy during this time and is grateful for the concern of his many admirers.”
In August 2022, the couple performed together for their 95th birthdays at a dedication ceremony “during Butterfly Daze’s opening weekend at the new Rosalynn Smith Carter Childhood Garden in Plains, Georgia.” according to Fox5 Atlanta. They have been isolated during the pandemic and seen less often in public in recent years, the TV station reported.

Jason Carter, the Carters’ grandson, tweeted Following the news that Jimmy Carter is being treated in a hospice, “I saw both of my grandparents yesterday. They are at peace and – as always – their home is full of love. Thank you all for your kind words.”
In 2021, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter discussed their long marriage and told ABC News that the pandemic had brought them closer.
“We hardly left our house” Jimmy Carter told ABC. “Before, we didn’t hang out that much — ordinary family trips and stuff like that.”
“It was just Jimmy and me,” Rosalynn Carter told ABC. “And it was really wonderful.”

According to ABC Newsthe Carters grew up together in Plains, Georgia and Rosalynn was friends with Jimmy Carter’s sister Ruth.
Jimmy Carter told ABC that he knew Rosalynn was the one right after their first date and said he told his mother, “That was the girl I wanted to marry.”
The former president told ABC of the marriage, “It was happy and joyous and obviously long-lived. Rose finally said OK and staying with me for so long has been the most wonderful thing in my life.”
“We developed a partnership while working in the produce business and it continued as Jimmy got involved in politics,” Rosalynn Carter said said to Fox 5 Atlanta. “I knew more about the business on paper than he did. He would take my advice.”

She married Jimmy Carter on July 7, 1946 and they had four children together: John William, 1947; James Earl III, 1950; Donnel Jeffrey, 1952; Amy Lynn, 1967. They also have 12 grandchildren (one deceased) and 14 great-grandchildren, according to the Jimmy Carter Library.
The Carters now live in Plains, Georgia.

Rosalynn Carter has been involved in public policy since her time as First Lady.
According to the Carter Center Rosalynn Carter, a nonprofit founded by the Carters in 1982, “has worked to improve the quality of life for people around the world for more than five decades. Today, through her work at The Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia, she is a leading advocate for mental health, nursing, early childhood immunization, human rights and conflict resolution.”
The Carter Center says Rosalynn is “a full partner with the President in all activities of the Center” and serves on the Board of Trustees.
Rosalynn Carter “founded and chairs the Carter Center’s Mental Health Task Force, an advisory panel of experts, consumers and advocates promoting positive change in the mental health field,” according to the center. “It brings together leaders of national mental health organizations to address critical issues.”
Mental health was a top concern for Rosalynn Carter, says the Carter Center.
She served on the Policy Advisory Board of the Atlanta Project (TAP), a Carter Center program dedicated to addressing the social ills associated with poverty, from the program’s inception in 1991 until its transfer to Georgia State University in 1999 and quality of life across the city,” it reads.
Outside the center, Rosalynn Carter is “President of the Board of Directors of the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers (RCI), established in her honor on the campus of her alma mater, Georgia Southwestern State University, in Americus, Georgia.” says the Carter Center.
She has also campaigned for vaccinations since 1991, has received many prestigious awards and has written five books, according to The Carter Center.
