Rumer Willis opens up about new boyfriend for the first time

A DWTS champion has opened up about their new relationship.

Dancing With the Stars Season 20 champion Rumer Willis has been dating boyfriend Derek Richard Thomas for several months, though their exact timeline for the relationship is unclear.

They kept their romance fairly quiet at first, only sharing occasional posts on social media until Willis announced that she and Thomas are expecting a baby together.

Since then, Willis has opened up about her relationship with Thomas, revealing some details about when they first met, their first date, and their future plans an interview in the podcast “Bathroom Chronicles”..

Rumer Willis says Derek Richard Thomas had a girlfriend when she first met him

On the February 9, 2023 episode of the Bathroom Chronicles podcast, Willis opened up about her new boyfriend for the first time.

“His name is Derek and he’s an amazing musician,” Willis said, adding that she fell in love with him the first time she heard him sing. “The way he sang. That, like, heartbreak and passion. I was like, ‘I want to meet this person,'” Willis recalled. However, Thomas was in a relationship at the time, so the two didn’t connect on a deeper level.

A few months passed and Willis decided to reach out to him on Instagram — and she found out he was single. The two eventually went on a date and really bonded. Willis said Thomas was very playful and joked with her and really made her laugh.

“There was just a part of it where I was like, ‘That’s my best friend,'” Willis said. She called him “incredible” and said the two made music together. Willis admits it was a “hurricane,” but she feels it was a sign from the universe that she and Thomas were meant to be together.

Willis and Thomas will be welcoming their first child in a few months. They want to move in together before the baby is born.

Both Willis and Thomas paid tribute to each other on Valentine’s Day, both publicly expressing their feelings for each other for the first time.

“My sweet sweet man @derekrichardthomas I didn’t know love could feel like this. I’ve never been happier in my life,” Willis titled her post. She included some photos of her and Thomas taken in the past year or so that they were together.

“You make everything funnier and sillier and happier. You take such good care of mine [heart]. Your silliness and laughter is something I am so deeply grateful for and has really made me fall in love with you. Thank you for being my accomplice, my confidant, my best friend and always saying yes to adventure and challenging me to be the best version of myself,” she continued, adding, “Thank you for making me a mom you and my partner in this wild ride to parenthood you are already taking such good care of me and our little one. We are so happy to love you.”

Willis captioned the post, “Rue and Little,” referring to the couple’s unborn child.

Meanwhile Thomas wrote a similar post, revealing the nickname he has for Willis; “Roobie Rue.”

“You are the best partner I could ever ask for, I love being around you. Thank you for believing in my dreams, laughing at my jokes and always playing along. I’m so glad you are who you are. You really are so nice, funny, talented, intelligent, sexy and wise. You changed my life forever, and for the better. I am extremely grateful that we can start a family together. Thank you for raising our child from the ground up. I am in so much awe and respect for this journey you are on. We’re in this together, but you’re doing all the heavy lifting and all I can do is cheer for you, feed you tacos, and appreciate you. Can’t wait to dance around the kitchen with our baby,” his post read.

“I want to thank you… for letting me… be myself again… @rumerwillis I love the shit of yours. All of that, the good shit, the real shit, the bull shit AND the bat shit,” his post concluded. Thomas also added some memories from his first year with Willis. The final slide in his post was a video of Willis showing off her baby bump.
