Ryan Fox remembers Shane Warne after St Andrews success

Ryan Fox paid tribute to former amateur teammate Shane Warne after claiming a one-shot win at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

New Zealander Fox had finished second at last year’s team event in Scotland along with former Australian Test spinner Warne, who died earlier this year.

And after making seven birdies and three bogeys on Sunday at the Old Course in St Andrews to secure his third DP World Tour title in front of his family, Fox recalled Warne.

He said: “To be honest, Warne is the only person I can really think of at the moment.

“He meant a lot to me and this event and was a great pal. It’s a terrible shame he’s not here.

“I will enjoy celebrating this with the family.”

Fox’s mum and dad – former All Blacks star Grant Fox – are in Europe for a month and witnessed a superb finish 68 at St Andrews that took Fox to 15 under par, a shot ahead of Callum Shinkwin and Alex Noren.

Fox went into the final round with a four-stroke lead, but three birdies in his first seven holes propelled him ahead before a combination of great approach play and brilliance on the greens helped the 35-year-old extend his three-shot lead to three play .

Fox suffered a late scare on the 17th but managed to limit the damage to just one dropped shot before safely parrying the last one to claim his second DP World Tour crown of the 2022 campaign.

Rory McIlroy finished fourth with 13 under ties after making seven birdies and a single bogey.

Shinkwin and Alex Acquavella won the team event by three shots to 37 under par.
