Sadio Mane may have cost Mo Salah more than just a World Cup spot – Our View

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are best friends in Liverpool but they are the biggest enemies on the international stage at the moment.

In fact, Salah must be sick and tired of the sight of Mane and his Senegalese team by now. In the past three months, Mane’s side have beaten Egypt on penalties in an Africa Cup of Nations final, while also costing them a place at the World Cup by beating them on penalties in a crucial play-off.

Salah will understandably be devastated at missing out on Qatar, but in a broader context, Mane’s Senegalese side may have cost him more than a spot at the world’s biggest tournament.

Indeed, Salah’s international failure could end up costing him this year’s Ballon d’Or.

Salah is undoubtedly one of the front-runners for the Golden Ball this year, but unfortunately his absence from this year’s World Cup will hurt his chances.

Like it or not, the World Cup has a huge impact on who wins the Ballon d’Or.

Luka Modric, Fabio Cannavaro, Paolo Rossi, Lothar Matthäus, Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo have all won Ballons d’Or, largely based on their performances at a World Cup, while there has only been one Ballon d’Or winner in a World Cup year to date didn’t play in the tournament – Kevin Keegan 1978.

With the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski, Kylian Mbappe and Kevin De Bruyne all heading to Qatar, the odds are good against Salah and it’s partly Mane’s fault.

Salah’s Ballon d’Or dreams are not dead and buried yet. Liverpool are still in for the quadruple, after all, but the fact that he’s not going to the World Cup certainly hasn’t hurt his chances of being crowned the best player in the world at the end of the year.
