Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio took to social media to open up about American Airlines and his former “challenge‘ co-star Sarah Rice finally commented, prompting a humorous exchange.

It all started when Bananas tagged American Airlines and said it wasn’t his way to “get businesses into overdrive” but he could no longer remain silent. “This is the fourth consecutive flight that has been delayed due to crew mishaps or mechanical problems,” he said. “I was a [Executive Platinum member] with for years, but my loyalty only goes so far (Ask Sarah). Do better or I’ll take my money and run.”

As Challenge fans well know, the last line referenced Rivals III when he was paired with Sarah Rice. The team won the entire season, but because Bananas scored more points than Sarah in the finals, he had the option of keeping all the money or splitting it with his partner. In a now iconic moment, Bananas host TJ Lavin said he will “take the money and run away”.

American Airlines responded to Johnny and thanked him for his loyalty. They informed the seven-time champion that they would be working with the maintenance team to get them up and running at 4:30 p.m. Bananas replied, “And today at 4:30 on the air you mean tomorrow at 8,” with a thumbs-up emoji. However, it wasn’t the airline’s response that caught fans’ attention, it was Sarah’s response to his original tweet.

Sarah replied that she was a loyalty member and said she would never betray the airline

Responding to Bananas’ tweet to American Airlines, Sarah tagged the airline and wrote, “Hey American Airlines, Sarah here!” She added:

I would never turn my back on you, not even for a big chunk of money! Feel free to reward my loyalty with 175,000 bonus miles (one for every dollar someone took)… DM me for my loyalty number. I memorized it.

Bananas’ betrayal of Sarah at the finish line of Rivals III was a major moment in the series’ franchise and the result of Bananas being betrayed by Sarah just prior to the Battle of the Exes II finale. Sarah blindly Bananas, her ally, knocked him out just before the final to increase her chance of winning, which she ended up doing with her partner Jordan Wiseley.

In their following season together, “Rivals III”, the two competitors were paired and they dominated the season. Viewers saw the pair begin to rebuild their friendship throughout the episodes, but TJ’s twist at the end was too tempting for Bananas. After the finale, Sarah did not return to the show.

she talked about the betrayal and not returning to the show to “settle the score” in a Tiktok video, and explained, “I never think about that shit. I don’t care and I’m grateful that you all care so much and I just want to give you the freedom to let it go because I did and it’s no big deal.”

She said her life is in a great place and she has pursued the career of her dreams. Sarah also joked that she brought home the rare gems she collected in the Rivals III finale in lieu of a cash prize, and that made her very happy.
