Arsenal finished fifth in the Premier League table, missing out on fourth place against Tottenham on the final day of the season.

While Manchester United, now managed by Erik ten Hag, endured their worst season during the Premier League era.

Nonetheless, many would have watched as Real Madrid beat Liverpool 1-0 in the Champions League final in Paris.

And Carragher, trying to overcome disappointment at his side’s defeat, took aim at both Arsenal and Man United, which was met with a lively reaction from fellow pundit and ex-United keeper Schmeichel.

Still, the conversation initially started with Micah Richards not wanting to be carried away by Manchester City’s Champions League hopes next season.

“I’m not participating in the chat (about Man City next season in the Champions League),” Richards said. “Game after game.

“I don’t get too excited. We were there and lost. Semi-finals and finals last year. This time I will be humble.”

Then Jamie Carragher interrupted: “Well it’s not going to be Manchester United or Arsenal, is it?!”

Peter Schmeichel then responded to Carragher’s taunt: “You support a really, really good home team. So just turn it down. You’ve been high spirits all year.”

Carragher then added: “Will he (Schmeichel) be doing the Europa League or the Champions League next season (as a TV pundit)?”

THURSDAY NIGHTS FOR ARSENAL AND MAN UNITED

Ten Hag might just be starting that pressure cooker of a job next season but Man United are expected to win the Europa League next season.

The same goes for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta, who have not finished in the Premier League’s top four since the departure of Arsene Wenger.

It’s just another sign of how the two clubs, which used to regularly battle it out at the top of the Premier League table, have declined since their legendary coaches stepped down.

And as of today, not much suggests they will close the gap at the top any time soon.
