Seahawks rumours: SEA expected to trade against former top 5 pick QB

The pressure is on Seahawks general manager John Schneider (left) and head coach Pete Carroll.

All signs point to the Seattle Seahawks staying at quarterbacks with Geno Smith and Drew Lock in 2022. If one of the signal callers fails to surprise this season, it likely means the franchise will be looking for another quarterback in 2023.

Dallas Robinson from Pro Football Network makes an interesting prediction that the Seahawks could try to trade for Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa next offseason. Robinson offered predictions for each team’s quarterback in 2023 and had Seattle strike a deal with Miami.

Part of the challenge the Seahawks could face is winning enough games to put themselves out of contention for one of the top quarterback prospects. This trade proposal assumes the Dolphins will also be looking for a quarterback upgrade next offseason under new head coach Mike McDaniel.

“Let’s complete the triangle: Garoppolo to the Raiders and Carr to the Dolphins leaves Tagovailoa in need of a new home,” Robinson wrote on Sept. 3, 2022. “Let’s send him to Seattle, where Pete Carroll and co. curiously decide to leave.” on Geno Smith as the starting quarterback going into the season.

“The Seahawks won’t be doing well this year, but they’re unlikely to be basement dwellers like the Falcons, Texans or Bears, all of whom are in the middle of a full demolition. Carroll is too competitive for that, and Seattle has enough pieces to keep her out of the top 5 picks in the 2023 draft.

“Tua could represent something of a bridge option with upside potential. If the Dolphins are ready to trade him next spring, he’s likely played bad enough that he won’t fetch a big prize. But he’s also young enough to start for at least a season while the Seahawks build the rest of their roster.”

Tua has 2 years left on his $30.2 million contract

The challenge for the Seahawks is whether the Dolphins are ready to move Tagovailoa, which likely means the former Alabama star underperformed in 2022. Tagovailoa will have every opportunity to succeed in Miami this season thanks to McDaniel’s creative offensive spirit combined with Tyreek Hill. The quarterback has two seasons left in his four-year, $30.2 million rookie contract with the dolphins.

Should Tagovailoa fail to impress in 2022, the Seahawks would find themselves in a similar situation as they are now with Lock. Seattle gambled on the idea that Lock would thrive after a change of scenery, but his inability to beat Smith bodes badly for Seattle will be able to develop a different quarterback than the one Denver produced in their first three NFL seasons seen.

However, given his status as a former No. 5 in the 2020 NFL draft, Tagovailoa has a little more upside potential. The quarterback helped Bama to a comeback win over Georgia in the 2017 national championship game after coming on in the second half. Tagovailoa threw for 2,653 yards16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions during his 13 appearances with the Dolphins in 2021.

Who will be the Seahawks’ QB in 2023?

NFL trades are complicated to make, especially when a potential quarterback is involved. Chances are the Seahawks’ solution at quarterback for next season will come through either the draft or free agency.

Seattle will have two first-round picks in 2023 thanks to trades from Russell Wilson and a total of four selections in the first two rounds. Even if the Seahawks’ pick is lower than needed to draft a top quarterback, Seattle could look to trade up to meet their goal.

Some of the top predicted signal callers for 2023 include Alabama’s Bryce Young and Ohio State’s CJ Stroud. ESPN Jordan Reids In the final mock draft, the Seahawks pass a 9th-ranked quarterback while picking Miami’s Tyler Van Dyke at 24th with the pick they get from the Broncos.

“With Geno Smith and Drew Lock expected to rock at the top of the depth chart this season, the Seahawks need to find a long-term answer in the QB, and after taking a different tack with their first Day 1 pick, Van Dyke still is here at No. 1 .24,” Reid explained on August 25. But there were also too many moments where he showed his youth last season. With more experience, Van Dyke could certainly find his way onto the draft committee.”
