Where are the Klingons in ‘Star Trek: Discovery?’
As of Thursday, December 30, 2021, “Star Trek: Discovery“Officially on a mid-season hiatus and will return to the airs of Paramount+ on February 10th. Since the show doesn’t air new episodes, it’s a great time to tackle a question that’s constantly arose during the show. Trek fan community: Where are the Klingons?
On the most recent episode of the show, “… But to connect,“The remnants of the Federation have come together to call representatives of the many star systems with which they are in contact. President of the Federation, Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal), explaining how they think about intimidation Anomalous Dark Matter (DMA) should be handled. Rillak shared several options for destroying or communicating with the aliens that run the DMA. They decided these aliens should be called 10-C.
In a speech no different Lord Elrond said to elves, dwarves, and men in “Lord of the Rings: Friendship of the Ring”“, noted Rillak, “our views are not always the same, but the safety of our galaxy is paramount. The scope of danger that threatens us is unprecedented, as is the scope of this conference. An act of trust between all of us. I am grateful for your willingness to collaborate at this important time.”
DMA meeting with Federation
As Rillak spoke, the camera panned around the room and revealed the various species present at this meeting. Among them were humans, represented by Captain Ndoye (Phumzile Sitole), a controversial figure from Season 3; Vulcans and Romulans, elf-butterfly Alshain who was introduced in Season 4, Volume 1; Kelpians, Orion, Trill, and many more. But, one race that wasn’t at the big meeting is arguably the most important race in the entire “Star Trek Universe.” No Klingons present.
Quite a few fans shared their thoughts on the absence of these iconic characters:
Klingons on ‘Discovery’
Unfortunately, Klingons’ topic of “Discovery” is a controversial one. The Klingons redesign The view that has remained largely unchanged since 1979’s “The Motion Picture” has not been well received by some fans:
As with most things, for some hate the new Klingons, others like them a lot:
Either way, the Klingons haven’t appeared on Discovery since Season 2, they have been slightly redesigned. Their absence has led some to speculate that the Klingon may have been part of the “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds“Showing or possibly being associated with a new power in the galaxy, especially after the destruction of”The Burn” throughout Part 3.
Klingon PTSD
Den of Geek’s Lacy Baugher wrote that after their rough intro, “viewers may have seen Klingon-related Discovery PTSD.” She said that the show’s writers had no choice but to remove those characters from “Discovery” in order to move on.
“The most obvious and easiest path is to simply remove the part of the program that has caused the most problems in the past,” writes Baugher. “That’s fine, there’s a lot of other stories to tell in this universe, and maybe the series will find a way to reintroduce the Klingons in a way that doesn’t derail all the other good work the movie does. have been doing since the part before the time we saw them. “
Baugher might be right, and since the show received a lot of backlash when it first aired, it made sense to remove one of the points of contention.
But the species is so essential to Trek that it makes sense to bring them back to life. If one only counts episodes and movies that have Mr. Worf (Pset by Michael Dorn), the total is about 300. Worf is present on 175 episodes of “Next generation” 103 episodes of “Deep Space Nine” and in the four Trek movies, a total of 282. The total number of Trek episodes and movies is just over 800, meaning that Klingon has appeared in more than a third of “Star Trek” totals. stories.
