Critics of the Maine senator haven’t forgotten her crucial role in confirming Judges Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, and she’s been posted on social media once again.
Several opponents called out and attacked Collins for innocence or complicity. Others called for her to resign. Professor Amy Fried of the University of Maine said Collins “helped make this happen”, and the Democratic Party of Maine blamed part of the blame on Collins’s feet.
Collins is seen as an important vote for Kavanaugh. She waited months before announcing her decision in a 45-minute speech on the floor. Shortly after her speech ended, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin announced he also voted for Kavanaugh.
The votes in the Senate were 50-48.
Mainers For Accountable Leadership, a pro-liberal group, said Collins “must immediately apologize to these organizations, whom she dismissed and demeaned in her pro-Kavanaugh announcement speech.”
Rachel Irwin, who works for Building Back Together, the company that promotes President Joe Biden’s policy agenda, called Friday’s abortion news a “legacy” for Collins.
Collins, a Republican, is an advocate for women’s right to have an abortion. She’s also crossed the aisle on key issues – including splits with Republicans over former President Donald Trump’s travel ban from several Muslim countries, repeal of the Affordable Care Act and on whether to convict Trump after his impeachment following the Capitol riots in January. . 6 year 2021.
The senator said in a statement Friday that she received assurances from Kavanaugh and Gorsuch that Roe suing Wade was an established legal precedent.
“To ignore a precedent overnight on which the country has relied for the past half century is not conservative,” she said. “It is a sudden and radical shock to the country that will lead to political chaos, anger and further loss of confidence in our government.”
Collins’ statement came shortly before Biden called the ruling “a tragic mistake.” She did not respond to a request for an interview Friday from the Associated Press.
The senator in her statement took aim at Gorsuch and Kavanaugh for what they privately told her and said during their confirmation hearings.
“This decision is inconsistent with what Judges Gorsuch and Kavanaugh have said in their testimony and in their meetings with me, where both are consistent about the importance of supporting age-old precedents. on which the country has relied,” she said.
The vote to confirm Gorsuch is not as narrow as Kavanaugh, whose nomination almost derailed over sexual assault allegations, which he denies. The senators approved Gorsuch’s nomination by a vote of 54-45.
Collins voted against Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination, saying it was too late in the Trump presidency and his successor should have been nominated to fill the vacancy.
Despite congratulations against Collins and coat hangers sent to her office, she easily won a fifth term in 2020.
She said she supports a bipartisan bill to codify abortion rights. “Our goal with this legislation is to do what the courts are supposed to do – provide consistency in the abortion law that Americans have relied on for the past 50 years,” she said.
