Several people were killed in a shooting at a Jacksonville store

Several people were fatally shot Saturday at a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Fla., the city’s mayor told a television station. A city council member says the shooter is dead. Mayor Donna Deegan told WJXT, “There are a number of fatalities” at the store, but didn’t give an exact number. Numerous police officers are near Edward Waters University, a small, historically black university. Hear from the mayor in the video player above: “This is unacceptable,” Deegan told the station. “One shooting is too many, but these mass shootings are really hard to take,” Jacksonville City Council member Ju’Coby Pittman told the broadcaster that the shooter was dead. She didn’t give details. “My heart weighs heavy. I’m sick of all the shootings,” she said. Edward Waters University students are being held in their dormitories, the school said in a statement. The school said no students or teachers were involved. Further details are not immediately available. The city is making the announcement and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will be holding a press briefing shortly. The shooting occurred exactly five years to the day when a gunman opened fire during a video game tournament in Jacksonville, killing two people before fatally shooting himself.
