Shania Twain has revealed that she once had a very awkward moment with talk show icon Oprah Winfrey over dinner when the conversation turned to religion.
The 57-year-old country singer sat down with Jessie and Lennie Ware on Table Manners for a podcast interview to promote their latest single Waking Up Dreaming and revealed how things quickly “got sour” with Oprah, 68.
While she explained that it was “one of my most memorable dinners” with Oprah, which took place at a restaurant, Shania recalled how she could sense a disagreement between them over their religious beliefs.
“It was great just having real conversations, but as soon as we started talking about religion, it all went wrong,” Shania said.
Shania Twain’s latest single “Wake Up Dreaming” was released earlier this month. And during her promotional tour for the song, the country music singer sat down for a podcast interview with Jessie and Lennie Ware on Table Manners.
“So I said, ‘Let’s stop talking about religion,’ adding that Oprah is ‘pretty religious.’
The country singer called Oprah “a smart lady.”
She clarified her position on the issue, noting that she “is not religious in the sense that I subscribe to a religion. I’m much more of a spiritual person. I would say I am a seeker.’
The 57-year-old artist recalled having dinner with Oprah Winfrey and getting “pissed” after they started talking about religion.
Shania, who was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, went on to hint at just how uncomfortable things were getting between her and Oprah, stressing that she likes to debate things.
She added: “There was no room for debate and I enjoy debating. Canadians like to discuss anything. So I’m like, “Oh, OK. It’s time to change the subject.”
The singer explained that the star was open to talking about their religious differences at the time of the dinner, but said “it’s just not debatable,” and didn’t elaborate.
During the podcast, the star repeated the phrase, “Everyone always says, ‘Never talk about politics or religion.’
