Shapiro joins Biden, Harris in Philadelphia to fund lead pipe removal

president biden and Vice President Harris on Friday will announce $500 million in federal funding for Philadelphia to modernize its water system as part of a broader government effort to remove and replace lead plumbing.

Biden and Harris will visit Belmont’s water treatment facility to explain the new investments in detail, a White House official said. They will announce that $160 million from the bipartisan Infrastructure Act of 2021 will be made available to upgrade water facilities and replace 20 miles of lead pipe, with an additional $340 million through an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) loan for the The city will modernize its water system.

The Biden administration has set a goal of replacing all lead-water supply lines over the next decade.

Harris last week hosted a White House summit focused on lead pipe replacement, where she announced a partnership of more than 100 state and local officials, labor unions, water companies and other organizations to expedite the administration’s efforts.

After the lead pipe event in Philadelphia, Biden and Harris will attend the Democratic National Committee winter meeting. The party is expected to approve a new main calendar this weekend that would put South Carolina first, a break with decades of tradition.

The Philadelphia trip marks the third time this week that Biden has set out to announce projects that will benefit from the bipartisan infrastructure bill of 2021 and underscores how the White House hopes to increase the tangible benefits that the Americans will see of the President’s legislative accomplishments.

Biden made stops in Baltimore and New York City earlier this week to highlight how funding from the bipartisan Infrastructure Act would be used for rail tunnel improvement projects at key bottlenecks in each area.
