Shark attack in Port Hedland: Just meters away from four-year-old son, father’s arm is almost ripped off

A father who nearly had his left arm severed from his shoulder after being attacked by a shark while spearfishing was yards away from his four-year-old son.

Father-of-three Robbie Peck, 38, was devastated while spearfishing off the coast of Port Hedland in Western Australia on Friday.

It turned out that his brother-in-law pulled him back onto the fishing boat, which also had Mr Peck’s young son on board.

A spokeswoman for the Royal Flying Doctor Service said he sustained multiple injuries and his left arm was “almost severed”.

Paramedics attended to him after he was brought back to shore by boat at 11.30am where he was then taken to Hedland Health Campus under Priority 1 conditions.

Mr Peck was later flown to Perth Royal Hospital for surgery in stable condition.

Mr Peck’s wife, Emily, recalled the moment she received the news from her husband.

“[It was]just this sinking feeling in your stomach and I swear all the blood just drained from my face,” she told 7News.

“It’s not a call you ever want to receive… you immediately expect the worst when you hear a shark attack,” Ms Peck added.

In a twist on the already tragic incident, this was actually Mr Peck’s last outing on the boat – the couple had made plans to sell it.

Ms Peck’s son said: “His father is so brave”.

“I think the guys on the boat pretty much protected him from all the trauma,” Ms Peck added.

The WA Fisheries Department is working with local authorities and is urging people to take extra precautions in the Port Hedland area.
