Shay Given and Mehrdad Ghodoussi react to the latest Newcastle transfer news

Confirmed on Thursday as Newcastle’s second summer deal, Nick Pope signed a four-year deal with Tyneside – prompting Shay Given and Mehrdad Ghodoussi to react to the England star’s arrival.

The 29-year-old Pope has opted to leave Burnley after six years at Turf Moor – after the club were relegated to the Championship. He made 155 appearances for the club, limited only by injuries and Tom Heaton’s early form.

Now the Englishman is moving to Newcastle and is expected to be the club’s No. 1 goalkeeper straight away – ahead of Martin Dubravka. He is Newcastle’s second signing after the Toon announced the permanent signing of Matty Targett.

Pope went to Instagram to thank Burnley for his six years at the club and to pay an emotional tribute to the club’s fans – also remembering his old side’s run to Europe. He also thanked the staff he had worked with at Burnley.

Given and Ghodoussi react as Pope confirms Newcastle signing

It’s a brilliant business from Toon. Costing £10million at the region, Pope has shown his form last season which is a sensational signing for Eddie Howe’s side. A good start from Dan Ashworth.

But there is still a long way to go. Newcastle need a centre-back, a midfielder, a right winger, a No 10 and maybe a striker. Talks are ongoing for Lille’s Sven Botman and Reims starlet Hugo Ekitike.

However, the signing of Pope dramatically improves Howe’s options between the sticks, and both Given and Ghodoussi were among those who reacted on social media – as was Warren Barton.
