Fans of Yacht Club Games’ popular mascot, Shovel Knight, have been yearning for a 3D platformer for years, and finally we finally got a sample of what it might look like if it ever happened.
Courtesy of the low poly Twitter artist Sam the salmonthis series of fan images presents the legendary treasure hunter in beautiful 64-bit glory.
The models ooze with a vibrancy reminiscent of Rare’s golden years, and of particular note is the user interface and its spacious layout; Unthinkable in modern games, but widespread in the mid-90s.
Yacht Club Games recently expressed interest in bringing Shovel Knight to the 3rd dimension, stating, “We’re all very obsessed with Mario 64 too, and we hope to one day make a 3D platformer that’s as fun.” , captivating, surprising, and exciting as it is”, although of course nothing has come of it in the six years since then.
In 2018, we got a glimpse of their take on Shovel Knight 64, but it wasn’t quite what fans were expecting… Its April 1 release date has certainly hinted some at its true intent.
While we’re no closer to a 3D platformer for the brave paladin, we can at least thank the fishy fanbase for quenching our thirst for these great polys, at least a little.
