That always seemed possible but on March 14, just after 9:30 p.m. CT, the Kansas City Sheriffs moved from the safe of superstar Tyrann Mathieu.
Signing up reported by NFL insider Adam SchefterBrett Veach and the captains have agreed terms with rising defensive back Justin Reid – formerly of the Houston Texans.
The deal guarantees the 25-year-old $20 million, with the potential for $31.5 million over three seasons. Given the limited amount of space that Kansas City has in 2022, it’s pretty clear that ‘Honey Badger’ won’t be returning.

Upside Move offers Mathieu Vibes
If the name Reid sounds familiar, it should. Justin’s brother Eric Reid was a seven-year NFL professional with the San Francisco 49ers and Carolina Panthers. Football runs in the family and the younger sibling of two has made a name for himself as a bright spot in a poor Texas defense.
Once a third-round pick outside of Stanford, Justin Reid started right from the start, with 12 rookies (15 appearances total) and 15 in his sophomore year. In four campaigns with Houston, safety forced nine turns (seven interceptions) and restored three fumbles.
He is considered an all-round defender entering his prime and although he is not a big name like Mathieu when he first joined KC, he has provided some of the vibes of the game. Honey Badger. Reid has been called a leader on and off the pitch despite his age, and his tough hitting has resulted in 315 tackles in his career (11 losses) and two goals in the net. He is also credited with 23 assists.
To be fair, Reid is having the worst season according to Pro Football Focus, but considering the Texan switched coaching staff last year, it’s not something to worry about. At its best, safety is excellent as a tackler and an insurance DB.
He should pair well alongside Juan Thornhill in this Steve Spagnuolo defence.

Thank you, Tyrann
As we mentioned at the beginning, this certainly ended Mathieu’s run for glory with the chiefs. The team leader was affiliated with many groups before the freelance agency started, and his social media activity certainly makes it look like he’s going to continue.
NFL Network Internal Mike Garafolo said it best following the announcement: “Tyrann Mathieu does not expect to return with #Chiefs as a freelance agency. This cements it. ”
It won’t be easy to see Mathieu play for another franchise after he’s already hit so much in Kansas City. The Chiefs Kingdom is forever grateful for its part in the Super Bowl victory over the Niners and all the victories before and after.
Having said that, this was a calculated decision by Veach and in the end, it was a smart one. Reid is almost 5 years younger than Mathieu and he is also much more affordable.
Tough decisions are always tough, but the best general managers know the right time to switch from a player. This may be the Chiefs’ first big move offseason but it opens the door to much more flexibility going forward.
