Fashion inspiration can strike anytime – and this season’s hottest accessory trend can only happens simultaneously with the start of Bridgerton’s second season Coincidence? I do not think so. Suddenly, silk evening gloves adorn the arms of modern royalty left and right, with Kim Kardashian, Olivia Rodrigo, Dua Lipa and Barbie Ferreira being just a handful of celebs trying on a silk armful.
While you may have noticed an influx of evening gloves on your Netflix account and Instagram feed of late, the trend dates back to the 17th century. Since then, everyone from the real Queen Mary and fictional Daphne Bridgerton to Marilyn Monroe has donned an evening glove for the odd soiree. The style peaked in the early 19th century when gloves were considered the standard of etiquette for both men and women, both day and night.
Evening gloves usually stick to the length of an ‘opera glove’ (above the elbow), so the terms have become somewhat interchangeable. Gloves have seen only a minor fashion resurgence in pop culture in recent years (think editorial shoots only, no true street style savvy), so it’s exciting to see the sleek style finally making a comeback among the fashion elite.
Exhibits A and B: Kim Kardashian in chocolate brown leather gloves by Fendi x Skims and Kacey Musgraves in red leather Valentinos. The latter look was from Valentino’s F/W21 collection, but e.gEvening gloves also featured on the Spring ’22 runways, with designers such as Erdem and Rokh making long gloves a focal point of their collection designs.
Along with longer lengths, short leather driving gloves are also having a moment on the runway, featured by brands like Saint Laurent, Maisie Wilen and Batsheva. The backstory to driving gloves is a little less glamorous and a little more literal – they’re designed for function rather than fashion, protecting the driver’s hands from wooden steering wheels and from the sun. Yes, that’s why most cars have a glove box.
Today, short leather gloves are often worn as a stylish accessory to protect hands from the cold.
Despite the luxury once associated with evening gloves, they are a relatively affordable accessory to try out. Adding gloves to a strapless black dress or bodysuit is an easy way to breathe new life into an outfit. If you want to take the look a step further, play up your gloves with lots of chunky rings or bracelets, stacked for added pizzazz.
My advice? Forget about finding Prince Charming and focus your energies on finding the perfect pair of princess-level evening gloves to slip into this season. Read on for a few favorites.
