Sino-US Democratic Rep. slams ‘racist’ Republican questioning her ‘loyalty’

House Democrats are rebelling after Texas Republican Lance Gooden questioned the loyalty of Chinese-American Rep. Judy Chu and suggested she shouldn’t be privy to classified information.

The comments came after Chu defended President Biden’s election to defend US trade interests in Asia, Dominic Ng, against allegations that he was working on behalf of Beijing.

“I question their loyalty or their competence,” Gooden said on Fox News on Wednesday. “If she doesn’t realize what’s going on, she has absolutely no contact with one of her most important constituencies.”

Chu, a California Democrat, called Gooden’s comments “racist” and demanded an apology.

Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries called the allegations “ruthless and xenophobic.”

“Congressman Gooden appears to sympathize with violent insurgents and is spreading big lies to the American people after voting not to confirm President Joe Biden’s election. Look in the mirror, Lance. You have zero credibility,” Jeffries said.

Chu had defended Democrats chief executive and donor Ng after the Daily Caller published a report that said Ng had been a member of two Chinese front groups.

Biden appointed East West Bank CEO Ng to chair the Business Advisory Council for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation last year.

Ng was an executive director at the China Overseas Exchange Association (COEA) from 2013 to 2017 before taking on a five-year tenure as executive director of the related China Overseas Friendship Association (COFA) in 2019, according to the caller.

“I question their loyalty or their competence,” Rep Lance Gooden said on Fox News on Wednesday. “If she doesn’t realize what’s going on, she’s completely lost touch with one of her core constituents.”

The caller cited reports from the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC), which stated that both the COEA and COFA are front groups for the United Front Work Department (UFWD), a CCP agency that runs intelligence and operations affected.

Judiciary Committee member Gooden and five other Republicans called for Ng to be investigated by the FBI.

Chu, head of the Asia-Pacific-American caucus, led her Democratic peers in a statement condemning the outrage over Ng as “profiling.”

“No Chinese American — indeed, no American — should be suspected of disloyalty or treason because of their race, their nation of origin, or that of their family members,” the Democrats said.

Referring to Chu as the “leader” of Ng’s defense, Gooden told Fox, “We stand against communist China and these Democrats’ first response is to come to their defense and call us all racists.”

“I’m genuinely disappointed and shocked that someone like Judy Chu has security clearance and is entitled to confidential intelligence briefings until this is found out.”

Members of Congress do not always have official security clearances, but are generally considered trustworthy when it comes to classified information in briefings.

When asked about criticism of his statements by Chu and Jeffries, Gooden said in a statement, “Instead of following facts that indicate the existence of Chinese espionage, Chu and Jeffries are playing the racing card in a sick display of disloyalty to our nation.”

The clash comes at a time of tense political tensions between Beijing and Washington, with House Republicans targeting Chinese competition and the origins of Covid-19, and the Pentagon tightening the number of US forces in Taiwan over fears of a Chinese one invasion increased.

Efforts to curb Beijing’s power around the world are mounting amid fears that the CCP will back Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
