Sir Keir Starmer will not mention transright issues when speaking at Scottish Conference, source says

Sir Keir Starmer is today accused of “dodging” the legal battle that led to the shocked resignation of SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon.

The Labor leader has faced claims that he was “scared” to raise the issue because his own party backed the SNP’s controversial trans agenda.

The row came after party circles confirmed he would make no reference to the controversy in a keynote speech at the annual Scottish Labor conference today.

Instead, Sir Keir will seek to capitalize on Ms Sturgeon’s departure by appealing to Scottish voters who had abandoned his party, declaring: “A Labor government is coming.”

Labour, which has just one MP in Scotland compared to 56 in Tony Blair’s heyday, is hoping the SNP leader’s resignation will speed up the party’s revival north of the border.

But the Tories picked up on his “transmission omission” last night.

Bassetlaw MP Brendan Clarke-Smith said: “Once again, even after the SNP’s horrific law brought down Nicola Sturgeon, Keir Starmer is cowering in front of the trans crowd and will not stand up for women and girls.

“Whether or not a woman has a penis is still a question Labor cannot answer. Starmer is afraid of this topic.’

The surprise announcement that the dominant figure in Scottish politics will step down after nearly a decade at the helm of her party and as the first Scottish minister has been billed as a major blow to the independence movement. It comes with the SNP currently under police investigation because more than £600,000 fenced off for pro-independence campaigns appeared to have “disappeared” from the party’s coffers. Ms Sturgeon’s decision also follows the major controversy surrounding her decision to push through new rules making it easier for people as young as 16 to change their legal gender.

She denied last week that her resignation was caused by public backlash against the controversial new law, which has been blocked by the UK government in Westminster.

But a Starmer spokesman hit back last night, saying: “The only ducking going on here is the proper administration of Scotland by the Tories and the SNP. Scots are crying out for help with energy bills, opportunities for their children and a health service that is there when they need it.”
