Free agency is always a frenzied time in the NBA as players try to leverage their existing teams for new deals while discovering new opportunities. For example, Kevin Durant wants to leave Brooklyn and people are calling the Nets to find out the asking price.

Durant didn’t put the Philadelphia 76ers on his list of desired destinations, but there was enough smoke to indicate that he might be interested. He has business interests in Philly, plus Joel Embiid has long admired Durant’s game. His inclusion in the Sixers’ Team of the Year would create a Super Team when paired alongside James Harden.

However, it will take a lot to get a two-time MVP into the Finals in a Sixers uniform. Any deal package will have to revolve around Tyrese Maxey, the fan-favorite defender heading into season three. Is Sixers president Daryl Morey ready to give up a guy reported as untouchable? It’s “Kevin Durant,” as Embiid once said.

Maxey was sitting at home thinking about his own business during his start as a freelance agent, watching things unfold and no doubt hearing his name pop up in the rumours. Commerce. He did not comment directly on Durant’s situation, but he took to Twitter to declare: “The NBA has to be the most exciting league… .. right?”

That’s right. To recap some of the bigger moves: Durant is driving trading; The Sixers signed PJ Tucker for three years, worth $33.2 million; Bradley Beal is in Washington; Bobby Portis is returning to Milwaukee; Jalen Brunson makes money with the Knicks; and Andre Drummond are going to Chicago.

Sixers Ink Danuel House with a two-year contract

Philadelphia has signed former Utah Jazz player Danuel House to a two-year contract. The deal is worth $8.5 million after the team uses the biennial exception, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The 29-year-old started the 2021-22 campaign with the Knicks before moving on to the Jazz. He averaged 6.8 points and 2.7 rebounds in 19.6 minutes per game while shooting 41.5% from the ground three points. It wasn’t exactly a flashy signing but House provided much-needed depth and toughness to the wing. The unattended boy from Houston reunites with Daryl Morey, his former general manager from his Rockets days.

Embiid step up for Durant?

There are a few reports saying that Embiid pushed the Sixers’ office to get Durant. Some of them have a questionable source; others seem to carry weight. Jason Dumas of KRON4 News in the Bay Area learned of rumors involving the Sixers at the closing of last year’s trade.

Dumas downplayed this regarding Embiid-Durant’s troubles: “Source: It’s unclear if Kevin Durant is interested in joining the 76ers, but Joel Embiid has made it clear to management that he wants them used all means to try to get Durant.”

Exciting. Durant’s connection to Philly is well documented. He holds an ownership stake in the Philadelphia Union, plus he grew up in Maryland for 2.5 hours. It should also be noted that Durant chose Embiid with his first pick in the 2022 NBA All-Star Game draft.
