Jamie O’Hara has claimed former Liverpool man Xherdan Shaqiri is said to look like ‘Lionel Messi’ during Switzerland’s 2-1 defeat by England at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.
The former Premier League midfielder believes Shaqiri, who left Liverpool in 2021, had “too much time on the ball”.
It was the 30-year-old who played a pivotal role for his country as he opened the scoring in the capital.
Shaqiri, who now plays for MLS club Chicago Fire, whipped in a brilliant left footed cross and it was too hot for Ben White when Breel Embolo went home.
In the end, England canceled out that Swiss opener, but in truth they were lucky to walk away with the win as O’Hara praised Shaqiri and criticized the home side’s defence. as he told Sky Sports.
“Shaqiri has too much time on the ball,” O’Hara said. “He looks like Lionel Messi out there. I’m sure he would (I’d love to hear that said).
“There isn’t enough drive or enthusiasm from the England team – the back three is everywhere.
“We’re talking about Harry Maguire being out of shape and John Stones suffering injuries. I’m telling you now, we need them both.”
It wasn’t long ago that Shaqiri wore Liverpool colors in the Premier League and Champions League on Merseyside.
But fast forward to today, and his career has likely taken a turn that not many expected.
After leaving Liverpool, Shaqiri went to Lyon but he struggled during his short stint in Ligue 1.
And despite only turning 30 in October, he now plays in MLS, a path many fans would have expected of him so early in his career.
In other news, Arsenal could now sell their £19m player for just £10m
