Stephen Warnock has stated that while ‘people talk about Bukayo Saka’ at Arsenal, it is really Martin Odegaard who is the ‘brain’ of the team, as he told the Football Show on Sky Sports.
The former Premier League left-back hailed Odegaard as an ‘exciting’ player in Arsenal’s attack and one who was the ‘centerpiece’ of Mikel Arteta’s side.
Signed up from Real Madrid, under an initial loan deal, north Londoners have made the midfielder’s decision permanent in the summer.
The 23-year-old struggled on his first Arsenal debut, but in this campaign he has taken his game to the next level.
However, despite the heavy pressure on his shoulders as he was signed from Real Madrid, Warnock was appreciated for what Odegaard had to offer.
“You talk about buying sensibly,” says Warnock. “Now, he is £30m, at and around that price from Real Madrid? You look at that and think of a person with that quality.
“He comes from Real Madrid and has a reputation as a rising player. An interesting player. But it’s a pressure. Then you have to go out and perform.
“He was almost the focal point of the team. Everyone was talking about Saka. But he’s the one who makes them tick. He was the one who found Saka in the back. Hit the leg. Pick out threaded passes.
“Odegaard is the brains on the team. He is excellent.”
While Odegaard is talking the ball in serious ways off the field, he can also do it off the pitch.
Arsenal’s reserve captain is Alexandre Lacazette – he was handed the captain’s armband when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was stripped in December.
However, all is well, Lacazette will leave at the end of the season, which opens the door for someone to become captain in the long term.
Odegaard has ruled his country and the Norway international could do the same at club level as he is certainly a contender.
