Newcastle United may have just signed their own Virgil van Dijk.
That is the view of Sky Sports reporter Pete Graves, who revealed he was told by a Dutch journalist how accurate the comparisons are.
Finally, earlier this week, Newcastle announced the signing of Botman, someone Eddie Howe and the Saudi Public Investment Fund had been tracking since January.
The former Lille powerhouse has joined the Magpies in what will prove to be close to one 50 million pounds Investment.
And Graves spoke to the Loaded Mag youtube Channel, said: “It’s another hugely talented footballer with an incredible career ahead of him. I spoke to a Dutch football journalist the other day… he said this guy is built just like Virgil Van Dijk.
“He’s the same size as him, he plays at the same speed and he flies into tackles and he’s tailor-made for the Premier League. I think he gives Eddie Howe a brilliant option as a centre-back.
Newcastle supporters should be careful.
Because every time a player becomes the best in the world at his position, every promising up-and-coming player is automatically compared to him, no matter how premature.
In Botman’s case, however, there’s real cause for excitement.
Because the big man is 22 and already tried. He’s not a teenager coming into the Premier League and could one day be as solid and reliable as the Liverpool man.
At his age the comparisons are far more believable and while it’s unlikely he’ll one day be as good as Van Dijk, he could still be an absolutely superb addition for Newcastle simply because the Reds defender is so good and so cross-generational and it will be fascinating to see how he fares in the Premier League.
