Jesus made a lively competitive debut as Arsenal defeated Crystal Palace to raise the curtain on the new season. But the 25-year-old failed to find the back of the net at Selhurst Park despite his tricky footwork and endless effort to get the Eagles in front.

However, Leicester would be Jesus’ first victim as an Arsenal star as he broke the deadlock on Saturday afternoon. The 56-cap Brazil international made a fine finish in front of his new supporters, after driving forward from the wing before striking the far corner.

Gabriel Jesus, the star of the show, while the Gunners enjoy a rousing start

Morrison was certain Jesus was the absolute star of the show as Arsenal got off to a flourishing start at home against Leicester on Saturday. The player-turned-expert gushed over what the four-time Premier League winners produced to give Arteta’s side a 2-0 lead.

“It’s that man, Jesus,” Morrison said. “First he gets the ball on the left, goes past Jonny Evans. Complicated game between him and [Granit] Xhaka, the ball finally comes to him and he’s in the corner and he just leads it to the far corner.

“Fantastic finish: side foot, right into the top corner. Brilliant. He was the best player on the pitch, outstanding.”

Performances like Jesus’ first-half against Leicester will go a long way towards showing why Arteta has convinced Arsenal to spend so much on the striker to lead their attack this summer.
