SNP urges Truss to top up £500m Just Transition Fund

The SNP has urged Prime Minister Liz Truss to increase Scotland’s Just Transition Fund to help protect thousands of jobs in the North East.

The party says it’s time for the UK government to “step up” amid the ongoing cost-of-living crisis and suggests failing to do so would be “extremely inconsiderate”.

The fund – a Scottish Government pledge of £500m over 10 years – aims to ensure oil and gas workers in the North East and Moray can move into renewable energy jobs.

The SNP previously called for Westminster to live up to its ambitions when the fund is launched.

SNP MSP Gillian Martin says now is the time to make “serious plans” to ensure bills are kept low and to protect the energy sector workforce as Scotland moves towards net zero .

Ms Martin, MSP for Aberdeenshire East, said: “During this Tory-induced cost of living crisis, we need to have serious plans in place to ensure we don’t slide into another energy crisis in the future.

It’s time for the UK government to take the lead

“At the same time, we must make a commitment to our vital oil and gas workers that they will not be left behind in the transition to renewable energy.

“While families now need meaningful support to help bring down bills, the UK Government must champion renewable energy to keep bills down going forward.

“The Scottish Government has made that commitment with the £500m Just Transition Fund. It is time for the UK Government to step up and ensure that we can build on the fantastic renewable energy technology that is already being developed and that we don’t use the talented workforce that already exists in our energy sector waste.”

She added: “Liz Truss has failed to make a commitment to renewable energy, which is extremely reckless. Renewable energy will not only pave the way for our energy future, but will also play a key role in achieving our world-leading net zero goals.”
