Sophia Loren seriously injured after fall at home – The Hollywood Reporter

Sophia Loren had to undergo emergency surgery on Sunday after suffering multiple fractures, including one to her femur, following a serious fall at her Swiss home.

The Italian acting icon, who turned 89 on September 20, fell in her bathroom and suffered multiple fractures to her hip and a serious fracture to her femur that required surgery, a source close to the actress said The Hollywood Reporter. The source added that there is cautious optimism about the outcome of the surgery and Loren’s recovery, which will include a short recovery and then a long rehabilitation.

News of Loren’s fall spread through a restaurant she planned to open on September 26 in the Italian city of Bari – the fourth such restaurant to bear her name. The actress was actually supposed to receive honorary citizenship of the city, but now all of her engagements have been canceled for the foreseeable future.

According to sources, the actress’ sons Carlo and Edoardo are by her side in the hospital. Edoardo directed Loren in her latest feature film, the 2020 Netflix feature film The life ahead of us, which earned her a David di Donatello Award for Best Actress. In 2021, she was the subject of the Netflix documentary What would Sophia Loren do?

Loren’s last public appearance was on September 2nd at the Armani fashion show in Venice, held during the 80th Venice Film Festival.
