Spaniard Arsenal let go of the ‘mastermind’ label for causing shock in the Champions League

Arnaut Danjuma has described ex-Arsenal boss Unai Emery as a “tactical mastermind” after Villarreal beat Bayern Munich 1-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday night. as he told BT Sport.

While Emery helped Arsenal reach the Europa League final, his tenure in north London ended with him receiving his marching orders before Christmas 2019.

The Spaniard would have felt he had to prove a thing or two and in truth he did just that in the faces of his former side last season.

En route to Europa League-winning Villarreal, the La Liga team knocked out Mikel Arteta’s side from the semi-finals before beating Manchester United on penalties.

Now the Yellow Submarine are in the biggest club competition in the world. And if they avoid defeat in Munich next week, they will end up in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Danjuma, who scored the only goal of the game last night, praised Emery, his tactics and the plan he came up with against the German champions.

“I’m not sure I should disclose it (Emery’s tactical plan) because we still have a second leg to play,” said Danjuma.

“I can assure you that Unai is a tactical genius. His strategy always seems to work for us. We trust our manager and our manager trusts us. And it goes hand in hand.

“Even tonight his plan was so good and we didn’t even execute it optimally because there were a lot of chances that we could have capitalized on more.”

Arsenal are hoping to return to the Champions League this season while their former boss is set to cause the biggest upsets.

Bayern are just one goal behind going into the second leg and as they proved in the second leg of the preliminary round by beating RB Salzburg by seven, this duel is not over yet.

But if Emery can pull that off then he will really punch well above Villarreal’s weight and prove many doubters wrong.

He is already doing an excellent job and the years at Arsenal when he would have felt like the world was on his shoulders now seem far, far away.
