Squirrel with a Gun is inspired by Yakuza and Shadow of the Colossus

When footage of upcoming indie game Squirrel with a Gun went viral last weekend, games like Untitled Goose Game and Goat Simulator immediately came to mind. But behind the scenes, the creator of Squirrel with a Gun takes inspiration from two unlikely places: the Yakuza franchise and Shadow of the Colossus.

Squirrel with a Gun is a true what it says on the can game, starring a squirrel with a gun. In an interview with IGN, Squirrel with a Gun creator Daniel DeEntremont shared the unique AAA game inspirations that informed how the eponymous squirrel can interact with enemies and the environment.

“In Yakuza I like all the heat action where the little crazy action packed cinematic [plays]so I put that in the squirrel,” DeEntremont said. “I like Shadow of the Colossus, I like climbing on the enemies which makes it a whole ordeal.”

Heat moves found in the Yakuza series are cinematically depicted combat moments that range from intense, close-range punches to more insane moves like hitting someone in the head with a bicycle.

When asked if the game would allow you to climb on secret agents’ pant legs, DeEntremont said they are currently working on adding human climbing to the game. When Squirrel with a Gun finally launches, you’ll be able to use combat moves reminiscent of Yakuza’s Kazuma Kiryu, and scale the human enemies like Wander does with the giant creatures in Shadow of the Colossus.

The game caught fire on social media but is still in a very early stage of development so the creator is still working on the exact details of the story.

“The idea is that the squirrel breaks into a top-secret experimental lab and randomly grabs this important hard drive, which happens to be shaped like an acorn, and then swallows it [agents] follow him throughout the game.”

DeEntremont said they’re undecided if the squirrel is just a regular squirrel or if it will have “Jason Bourne-like powers.” The creator also said he’s considering reskins for the squirrel of other creatures with similar body types, including ferrets and chipmunks. Other colors are also planned for the squirrel, and maybe some “cute little outfits, like a tuxedo or a bomb suit.”

As for weapons, the squirrel can handle a shotgun, pistol, RPG and a few others. You can rocket jump as a squirrel and fire your gun straight into the ground to launch yourself across the map.

There is currently no release window for Squirrel with a Gun, but you can check out early screenshots of the game on Steam. DeEntremont also told IGN that after the initial Steam release, he would love to see Squirrel with a Gun on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.
