Steelers Considered ‘Top’ Landing Point for 3-Time Professional pitchers

The Steelers could be the perfect landing spot for a safe Landon Collins.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are considered a “top” fit for one of the best freelance agents on the market.

According to Bleacher Report’s Ian Wharton, the Steelers are one of three teams — the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers are others — deemed “best suited” to keep Landon Collins safe. Wharton explains how the 28-year-old can excel as a side pack weapon.

“Collins is at his best as a downhill safe, who acts more like a reserve soldier,” Wharton said. “He’s not very good at man’s coverage, but because the NFL has embraced the three safer sides, Collins has enjoyed a resurgence in potential value over the past two years. There aren’t many loopholes left in the lineup, so he might need to be a super secondary weapon. “

Collins failed to make the big contract

The three-time Pro Bowler player (2016, 2017 and 2018) signed a major contract with Washington Command prior to the start of the 2019 season, signing a six-year, $84 million deal. However, his $16.2 million cap for the upcoming season is too much to justify his actual performance. The commanders released Collins back in March.

Collins earned more than $16.5 million during the 2021 season as the league’s second-highest secure payer.

According to Pro Football Focus, the safety veteran only hit a defense of 54.7 and coverage of 38.8 which was absolutely terrifying last season. In terms of perspective, Collins is one of the eight worst safe players in the defensive class and ranks last dead among players with at least 600 goalscoring goals during the season.

While Collins was arguably the worst safe team in the league last season, he was absolutely brilliant near the boundary of the script. According to the PFF, the veteran safety team has a defensive score of 82.5 on the run and a score of 74.0 on the midfield kick, according to the PFF. His running defensive score is seventh and his passing is 17th out of all safes.

Why the Steelers can avoid signing Collins

Wharton explains how Collins can be a key player on a rebuilding team or a key contributor on a campaign team.

“At just 28 years old, Collins should have attracted interest from several franchises,” says Wharton. “The rebuilding teams can get one of his best seasons in 2022 and keep him. The playoff contenders could certainly use his comeback in a depth role. “

The Steelers don’t need a lot of safety at the moment. In fact, they recently signed Minkah Fitzpatrick free safe with the wealthiest safety deal in NFL history (four years, $73.6 million).

Pittsburgh also re-signed strong safety Terrell Edmunds – who has been a Steelers starter since the 2018 season – for the season and signed former Dallas Cowboys safety starter Damontae Kazee for intensive purposes .

As Wharton mentioned, Collins will have to fit into the Steelers defense as an extra safety pack. Still Curtain’s Andrew Falce explains how Collins can be used as a safety near the boundary of the scenario when covering the head tightly within human coverage or when hurling passers-by.

Falce explains: “The place where Collins has fallen has recently been in the news. “While he doesn’t have the best ability for one-on-one coverage, he can serve as an option to cover tight spots if needed. That said, the more scoped he is, the more he becomes his responsibility. While in the box, he can perform in-game plays running and though as a blitzer. He will serve in the role that Steel Men usually prefer their strong security to serve. “

If the Steelers are looking for an additional safety net for veterans, Collins can be helpful. But considering the Steelers already have two veteran safes entrenched as starters with one veteran safe being predicted as a backup, it doesn’t look like Pittsburgh will be targeting Collins.
