Chester Rogers of the Tennessee Titans is pressured by Ulysees Gilbert of the Pittsburgh Steelers during the return game on December 19, 2021.

On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers abandoned Ulysees insider Gilbert III with an injury designation, according to the NFL’s daily deal wire. It was another difficult break for the fourth-year defender, who appeared in 28 games over three seasons after Steel Man made him a sixth-round pick in 2019 from Akron.

Enter Ex-Jets Linebacker Hamilcar Rashed Jr.

Replacing Gilbert on the 90-man roster is the former New York Jets player outside of full-back Hamilcar Rashed Jr., 24, an untrained former free agent from Oregon State who joined the Jets in 2021. Rashed – 6 foot-4 and 235 pounds – failed to make the New York 53-man roster as a rookie but was signed to the team’s practice team in September. He was elevated to the list. active book for New York’s Week 10 game against the Buffalo Bills and was credited with a tackle, having played 16 times in defense and twice in specialty teams, according to Pro Football Reference.

Rashed signed a Reserve/Futures contract with the Jets in January 2022, but was waived earlier this week, giving the Steelers the opportunity to ask him for an exemption.

Now, he’ll have the chance to land a job in Pittsburgh, competing with an ambitious backup team headed by Genard Avery, a former Browns and Eagles defender who signed a one-year contract in Last March. There is also former Broncos seventh-round player Derrek Tuszka, who appeared in 15 games against Pittsburgh last season as a substitute.

Also vying for a spot on the 53-man list is former “camp phenom” Tuzar Skipper, who was signed in early June; as well as Delontae Scott, who spent most of last season with Pittsburgh’s practice team, but was elevated for the November 2021 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Last but not least, it was Ron’Dell Carter, who was scored on Monday, August 8, when TD Moukeeper was exempt.

Yet another injury for Ulysees Gilbert

As for Ulysees Gilbert, he’s having the best and most consistent season of his NFL career. He has played in all 17 games in 2021 and is credited with 15 tackles (11 solos) in the course of 36 defensive saves and 337 exceptional catches, according to Pro Football Reference.

But his first two seasons in the league were marred by injury, with an L-5 spina bifida in his lower back having sidelined him for the second half of the rookie season. In 2020, he spent time on the bench again because of a back injury.

This time, it wasn’t the back problem that caused him to lose his spot on the list. By Brooke Pryor of ESPN, he has been seen in recent days with a boot with his right foot.

He “had a good camp at ILB before his injury, which has unfortunately become a common theme in his career,” noted Pryor, who covered the Steelers for ESPN NFL Nation.

Gilbert, still only 25 years old, has been credited with 25 tackles (17 solos) during his career. He was picked No. 207 overall in 2019, with a draft pick being acquired from the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for an offensive save Marcus Gilbert.
